texas

Length of border with mexico: 1,241 miles

with a shared border distance with mexico that is far larger than california, arizona and mexico combined, texas has been ground zero for the immigration crisis in the united states. it’s so large that i had to dedicate three galleries to texas, so make sure to check those out as well.

Texas’ issue is also unique compared to the other border states because it also has the least amount of border wall between itself and mexico. the majority of the border is separated by the rio grande river, wilderness and even a national park.

These are the primary factors as to why the majority of illegal encounters occur in texas. as the immigration situation has become a bigger issue over the years, texas is the only state that has challenged the u.s. government and attempted to secure its own border as it claims is necessary due to the inaction of the federal government to do so.

I’ve covered the infamous park in eagle pass that sits across from piedras negras, mexico. over the years i’ve witnessed the changes its undergone as it went from migrants crossing over unobstructed as they walked across the river, to what we have today in 2024 where texas has installed freight containers, constantine wire, and their own version of a wall to be able to slow down the flow of the migrants crossing that area.

key areas in texas along the border include brownsville, del rio, eagle pass, el paso, mcallen and roma.
